This 8-inch long tool is a stunning wooden representation of the traditional Japanese ink line, known as a sumitsubo, which is thought to have originated in ancient Egypt and China. The sumitsubo holds significant spiritual importance, historically being left in newly constructed shrines or temples as a cherished item. Today, it's often given to master carpenters, who may then donate it to a shrine. Functionally, it's used to mark wood where cuts are to be made, similar to a Western chalk line. Its spacious well was designed to hold a wad of ink-saturated silk cotton, allowing the tool to pick up ink for marking when drawn through.
